Nominal vs Real vs PPP GDP — What’s the Difference?

Nominal GDP (at current prices) measures output in today’s rupees — it goes up both when more is produced AND when prices rise. Real GDP (at constant prices) removes inflation, showing true growth in output. PPP GDP adjusts for differences in price levels between countries — since things cost less in India than in the US, India’s PPP GDP is much higher than its nominal USD GDP.

For year-on-year comparisons, use real GDP growth rates. For comparing India’s economic size with other countries, nominal USD GDP and PPP GDP give different perspectives. See methodology page for base year details.
