⚠️ NNI vs GDP per capita: India’s official “per capita income” figure is Per Capita NNI (Net National Income), NOT Per Capita GDP. NNI = GDP minus depreciation of capital assets (CFC). The World Bank reports Per Capita GDP in USD. Both are shown here — they measure slightly different things. See methodology page for details.

💡 How to read this table: “Current prices” reflects actual rupee income in that year (includes inflation). “Constant 2011-12 prices” removes inflation, showing real purchasing power growth. For understanding whether Indians are actually better off over time, use the constant prices column.

What Per Capita Income Does — and Doesn’t — Tell You

Per Capita NNI is an average figure — it divides total national income by total population. It does not reflect income distribution, inequality, or the experience of median households. India’s Gini coefficient and household consumption surveys (HCES) provide a more granular picture of how income is distributed across the population.

India’s per capita income in USD terms is significantly lower than its PPP-adjusted figure because the cost of living in India is much lower than in the US or Europe. A rupee buys considerably more goods and services within India than its dollar equivalent would in a high-income country.

What is India’s per capita income in 2024-25?

India’s Per Capita Net National Income (NNI) in FY 2024-25 is ₹2,16,274 at current prices and ₹1,30,389 at constant 2011-12 prices (Provisional Estimate, MoSPI May 2025). In USD terms, the World Bank estimates India’s per capita GDP at approximately $2,397 for 2024 (nominal) and $9,817 on a PPP-adjusted basis.

What is the difference between per capita income and per capita GDP?

Per Capita NNI (India’s official per capita income) is calculated from Net National Income (GDP minus capital depreciation). Per Capita GDP does not subtract depreciation. NNI is considered a better measure of actual income available to residents. In practice, the two figures are close but not identical — India’s official “per capita income” refers to Per Capita NNI, not Per Capita GDP.

How has India’s per capita income grown since 2000?

India’s per capita NNI at current prices grew from approximately ₹21,048 in FY 2000-01 to ₹2,16,274 in FY 2024-25 — a nominal increase of about 10 times over 24 years. At constant 2011-12 prices (real terms), growth was from approximately ₹28,785 to ₹1,30,389 — roughly 4.5 times in real purchasing power.
