How to Use the Savings Goals Calculator

  1. Enter your savings goal — for example ₹5,00,000 for a car down payment, a wedding or an emergency fund.
  2. Enter the amount you’ve already saved towards this goal.
  3. Set your timeline in years and months.
  4. Add an expected annual return — around 3–4% for a savings account, 6–7.5% for FDs or RDs, or 0% if you’ll keep cash.
  5. See the monthly amount you need to save, total deposits, growth from returns and your current progress.

Savings Goal Formula

The calculator first grows your existing savings: Future value of current savings = C × (1 + r)n. The remaining gap is then covered by monthly deposits: Monthly saving = Gap × r ÷ [(1 + r)n − 1], where r is the monthly return (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of months. For example, to reach ₹5,00,000 in 3 years with ₹50,000 already saved at 7% a year, you need to save roughly ₹11,000 a month.

Actionable Tips to Reach Your Savings Goals Faster

  • Pay yourself first: set up an automatic transfer or recurring deposit on salary day so saving happens before spending.
  • Keep each goal separate: a dedicated account or RD for each goal makes progress easy to see and harder to spend.
  • Match the product to the timeline: short-term goals suit savings accounts and FDs; long-term goals can consider market-linked options like a SIP.
  • Increase savings with every raise: even a 10% yearly step-up can shorten your timeline noticeably.
  • Track progress monthly and adjust — rerun this calculator whenever your income or goal changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I save each month to reach my goal?

It depends on your target amount, current savings, timeline and the return you earn. Enter these into the calculator above to get an exact monthly figure — a longer timeline or higher return lowers the amount you need to save.

What return rate should I use?

Use a conservative rate that matches where you will keep the money: roughly 3–4% for savings accounts and 6–7.5% for bank FDs or RDs. If you’re unsure, use a lower rate so you don’t under-save.

Should I build an emergency fund before other goals?

Many planners suggest keeping 3–6 months of essential expenses as an emergency fund first, so an unexpected bill doesn’t force you to break other savings goals or take on debt.

Does the calculator account for inflation?

No — it uses the goal amount you enter. For long-term goals, estimate the future cost first with our Inflation Calculator, then use that figure as your savings goal.
